Originating from the Oga Peninsula in Akita Prefecture, these fearsome masked figures visit homes on New Year’s Eve to warn against laziness and bad behavior – while also bringing blessings.
Though they may look like demons, Namahage are considered deities, and their visits are a cherished tradition in northern Japan. The Danish Namahage Association brings this ritual to life with striking costumes and booming presence.
